Who Can You Count on For Disaster Relief?

Where to turn to for disaster relief.

If you ever find yourself in the middle of a disaster, you may find yourself wondering where to turn to for disaster relief. It can be scary feeling like you’re in the middle of an emergency with nowhere to turn. I’m Ryan Edgerton and I’m going to go over some disaster relief basics with you.

You’re Your Own Best Friend

While it’s true that there are a number of disaster relief resources out there, the truth of the matter is that they’re only as good as their resources. If you want to truly be prepared for a disaster, you’re going to want to look to yourself for disaster relief. This means planning ahead of time.

Many experts suggest having a savings that can last you six months of expenses in case of an emergency. This means if you have expenses of $2000 per month, your savings should be $12,000. While this may not seem feasible at first, if you put just 10 percent of your income away in a savings account, it will accumulate and you’ll be on your way to having your own disaster relief fund.

FEMA

FEMA is supposed to be there to help with disaster relief, although it’s become a true four-letter word since Hurricane Katrina hit.

While it’s true that FEMA is meant to aid in disaster relief projects, it has been proven that they can’t be counted on one-hundred percent of the time. While they may be there in your time of need, it may be wise to count on other resources for your disaster relief needs.

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is a well-known disaster relief organization. If you find yourself in the middle of a disaster, don’t be surprised if the Red Cross is right there in the heart of it all trying to make things better for those around them. From volunteer efforts to financial aid, the American Red Cross is one of the stronger organizations that you can count on.

Local Disaster Relief Efforts

In addition to national disaster relief efforts, many communities offer local disaster relief as well. If disaster has struck your area, check and see what local disaster relief efforts are occurring in your area.
