What You Need to Know About Emergency Kits

What goes into emergency kits and where to get yours.

Emergency kits are a must have for any disaster or emergency situation. If you don’t yet have your emergency kits ready, it’s about time you started putting one together.

I’m Ryan Edgerton and I’m going to tell you what goes into an emergency kit and where you can get your supplies for your emergency kits.

Food and Water

Food and water are the two most important elements of emergency kits. If you want any chance of survival, you’re going to need food and water if disaster strikes. Make sure you have at least three days of food and water in your emergency kits.

You don’t have to put expensive survival rations into your emergency kits. You can put nonperishable goods from your local grocery store into the kits and you’ll survive just fine. Just make sure that you have a non-electric can opener to open the food and a portable cooking unit to prepare it.

Emergency Radio and Flashlight

Another important party of emergency kits is an emergency radio. I personally recommend the type of emergency radio that is powered by crank motion. This will help you avoid losing power due to running out of batteries. Some emergency radios can also double as flashlights. If yours doesn’t, then the next thing on your list should be a flashlight with extra batteries.

Clothing

Clothing is another important part of your emergency kits. Make sure that you have at least three days worth of clothing packed and that you include sturdy shoes that are comfortable to walk in. You don’t know if you’re going to be wading through water or hiking through rubble, so sturdy shoes are a must-have.

First Aid Kit

If you’re in the middle of a disaster, chances are you or someone you know are going to incur some minor injuries. Because of this it’s extremely important that emergency kits contain a first aid kit. Band-aids, ace bandages, gauze, ice packs, surgical needles and thread... All of these are important parts of a first aid kit.

Prescription Medications

Do you take prescription medications regularly? Emergency kits should contain at least three or four day’s worth of prescription medication.

Tents and Blankets

At the least, emergency kits should have a solar blanket. A tent is even better. Just make sure that if you pack a tent in your emergency kit, it’s light enough to carry comfortably but large enough to accommodate you and your family.

While emergency kits may take some time and effort to put together, you’ll be happy you took the time if disaster strikes close to home.
