The Terror of Earthquakes

What to do when earthquakes shake your world.

Earthquakes can be a scary ordeal, but knowing what to do before, during and after an earthquake may save your life.

I’m Ryan Edgerton and I’m going to tell you what you need to know in order to survive earthquakes. From preparation before the earthquake to what to do after, I’ll make sure you are armed with the knowledge you need.

If you live in an area that has a potential for earthquakes, you’ll want to make the following preparations.

1. Furniture that is top heavy should be bolted to the floor or the wall.
2. Breakables should be kept on lower shelves.
3. Heavy artwork and mirrors need to be anchored.
4. Overhead lights need to be anchored.

During Earthquakes

The most critical time for survival is during the earthquake. It’s extremely important that you know where to go and what to do when the earthquake strikes.

Inside

If you’re indoors when the earthquake strikes, stay inside and take cover. During earthquakes it is important to stay away from windows and go underneath a table or take cover in an interior hallway or room. Do not be surprised if fire alarms or sprinkler systems are activated during the earthquake.

Outside

If you’re outside when the earthquake hits stay outside. Get away from buildings, poles, signs and/or wires and other items that can become hazardous in the case of earthquakes. You’ll want to make sure that you are away from any objects that could possibly fall on you, including trees.

In Your Car

If you’re in your car when the earthquake happens, get off to the side of the road as quickly as possible. Stay in the car, but make sure that your car is away from anything that may fall on it including bridges, trees and buildings.

After the Quake

Do not come out from safety until the shaking has stopped. Be prepared for aftershocks, which can be very strong in and of themselves. Almost all earthquakes will have aftershocks. Make sure that you keep an eye out for falling objects if you are outside. Objects that are loose may become a hazard when aftershocks take place.

Stay off the Phone

Unless you have an emergency, do not use the phone directly after earthquakes occur. The lines need to be clear for people with emergencies.

By taking the appropriate precautions and knowing where to go and what to do in case of earthquakes, you can keep yourself safe if one should occur.
