The Secrets of Disaster Planning Success
What you need to know about disaster planning.
While disaster planning may seem like a boring task, it’s something that everyone should be prepared for. For example, would you know what to do if a tornado hit your home? Would you know where to go if there was flash flooding in your community?
A lack of disaster planning is not only ill advisable, it could be deadly in severe circumstances.
Your Life Depends On It
One of the secrets of great disaster planning is to approach the disaster planning process as though your life depended on it, because it very well might. If you place as much importance on disaster planning as it deserves, you’ll be more motivated to do disaster planning the way it needs to be done.
Organization is Key
Now that you’ve given the disaster planning process the importance it deserves, it’s time to get organized. Checklists are great disaster planning tools as are disaster planning templates.
Backup Your Data
In the event of a disaster, your computer may be destroyed. If you don’t backup all of your data, you’re going to lose all of that too. That’s why data backup is such an important part of the disaster planning process.
When you backup your data, make sure that you make more than one copy and keep them in separate locations. This way, if one copy gets destroyed, you’ll have another one to fall back on.
Centralize Your Documents
In addition to securing your electronic information, your personal information needs to be accounted for in your disaster planning process.
You should keep all of your personal information in a secure, fire-proof safe or filing cabinet. By keeping your documents centralized and secure, you’ll be able to get to them when you need them.
You can also keep .pdf or .tiff copies of your vital documents on your computer and your backup disks.
Set a Meeting Place
During your disaster planning, set a meeting place with your family. This will be a place where you and your family can meet each other should you become separated.
Know Your Escape Routes
When doing your disaster planning, look at a map and map out all of the escape routes from your community. This will ensure that you can make a speedy exit should you need to.
By taking the time for disaster planning, you’ll effectively increase your chances of survival should disaster strike.
