It’s Time to Think about Winter Preparation
Now is the Perfect Time to Begin Thinking about Winter Preparation
Winter is quickly approaching, so now is the perfect time to start thinking about winter storm preparation. Without proper winter preparation, you may find yourself stranded in a storm or holed up in your house without means for survival. Winter preparation is a must for everyone and there are certain things you can do now to make facing a winter storm bearable.
Food and Water
There are some important things to focus on when beginning your winter preparation. It is always a good idea to have extra food and water on hand throughout the year, but you really need to stock up in the winter. If you are without power, you will need food that is nonperishable. If you don’t have at least one or two months of supplies on hand, now’s the time to start getting them together. You also need to remember to keep a non-electric can opener on hand so you can open canned goods in the event of a power outage. Stock up on plenty of dried and canned goods such as nuts, trail mix, and tuna and if you have pets, make sure you have an extra supply of pet food for them as well.
A Means of Warmth
Another important component of winter storm preparation is to have extra blankets and sweaters on hand. If you are without lights and power, you will definitely want to be able to stay warm, safe, and comfortable. Keep extra blankets, sweaters, hats, scarves and gloves in a designated and easily accessible location. Remember to also keep a supply of extra blankets and sweaters along with gloves, hats, and scarves, in your car as well in case it breaks down when you are driving in a blizzard.
Emergency Heat
Winter storm preparation would not be complete without giving some consideration to emergency heating. Having a generator is very useful if you face a winter storm and your power goes out. A generator is also essential for anyone who takes medication that requires refrigeration.
Light
Keep plenty of flashlights on hand with extra batteries even if you do have a generator. Store them in an easily-accessible location. You might also want to invest in a flashlight capable of producing light without the use of batteries.
If you take time now to plan for a storm during the winter months, you will be glad you did. Winter storm preparedness can make an undesirable time go more smoothly and safely.
