How to Make Survival Kits
What survival kits are and what you need to keep in them.
Survival kits are an absolute must-have for any individual or family. If you don’t have survival kits in your household, you don’t have to go out and spend lots of money on one. I’m Ryan Edgerton and I’ll show you how to make your very own survival kits at home.
Survival Kits Step 1 -- Containers
The first thing you need when making survival kits is large plastic containers with sealing lids. You’ll use these containers to store your survival kit supplies in. Make sure the containers are large enough to hold everything you need for your survival kit, but small enough so you can take it with you should you have to evacuate.
You’ll need two to three plastic containers for each survival kit you prepare as foods need to be kept separately from fuels.
Survival Kits Step 2 -- First Aid Supplies
The next thing that you need to focus on when making your survival kits is your first aid supplies. Make sure that you have the following items in your survival kits in case of an emergency:
• Band-aids of various sizes
• Gauze bandages
• Ace bandages
• Medical tape
• Medical scissors
• Advil
• Tylenol
• Benadryl
• Pepto Bismol
• Rubbing alcohol
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Sunscreen
• Chemical ice packs
• Chemical heat packs
• Surgical needles
• Strong thread
• Tweezers
• Q-tips
• Snake bite kit
• Thermometer
• Four days supply of prescription medicines
Survival Kits Step 3 -- Clothing
Now that your first aid kit is assembled, you’ll need to put clothing into your survival kits. Make sure that you have enough clothing for three days change and make sure your survival kits have clothing that is suitable to the climate. For example, if you live in the Chicago area, you’d want to pack three days of both winter and summer clothing to account for the changing climate.
Survival Kits Step 4 -- Food
Once your first aid kit and clothing are packed away, you’ll want to pack your food. Keep all food in a separate container so it won’t get contaminated by chemicals or medicines. Pack non-perishables and make sure that you also pack a non-electric can opener so you can open cans of food if there is no power available.
Survival Kits Step 5 -- Fuel
If you have a generator, you’ll need fuel in your survival kits. Gasoline should only be kept in approved containers and should be kept away from heat and flame. You may also want to keep Sterno cans in your survival kit to cook food if alternate power sources aren’t available.
Make sure you keep your survival kits located in a place that is easily accessible should you need them and you’ll be prepared should an emergency hit home.
