Do You Have Your Emergency Maps Ready?
Why You Need Emergency Maps
Preparing for an emergency is very important and can allow a greater sense of security if a disaster strikes. Unfortunately, many of us don’t think about emergencies until one actually hits us. One often-overlooked component of preparing for an emergency is determining an evacuation route and keeping emergency maps on hand that outline the different exit routes available to you.
One Day It’s There, The Next Day It’s Not
In the event of an emergency such as a flood or other natural disaster there might be restrictions on what roads you can travel on and you will have to do your best to obey those restrictions. For example, if your area is experiencing flash flooding and you need to evacuate, some roads may be under water and you’ll need to have maps on hand so you can look into other options. Emergency maps definitely come in handy during an emergency, especially if larger roads that you are familiar with are not accessible.
21st Century Road Maps
GPS navigators can be an important feature in our everyday travels, for the occasional road trip, and when we have to navigate a detour. They are incredibly convenient and a time-saving device for many consumers. They can also be a lifesaver when it comes to finding a safe exit route in case of an evacuation.
However, even if you have a GPS navigator, you should still carry emergency maps in your car. What would happen if your GPS navigator wasn’t working in the midst of an evacuation? It would be critical to have emergency maps in your glove box.
Plan Ahead
Don’t wait for an emergency to happen before buying your emergency maps. Chances are gas stations will be sold out and you’ll be left empty handed. Buy your emergency maps ahead of time and familiarize yourself with them. Make sure you buy maps on the local, county, state and countrywide level so that you have directions to wherever you may need to go.
Once you have your emergency maps, make sure you know how to read them. A map-reading ability is an essential step towards preparing for an emergency. Try to imagine the worst case scenario where you or your family is left to determine an escape route on your own without much intervention. If it were to actually happen, you’ll be glad you did.
